Why it matters
Conversion rate is the lever that multiplies everything else. Double it and every visitor you pay for, paid or organic, works twice as hard, without buying a single extra click. That is why improving it is usually cheaper than growing traffic.
It is also the number that exposes a leaky page. If 3,000 people arrive and 90 act, the other 2,910 had a reason to leave, and that reason is usually fixable: unclear offer, slow page, too many form fields, no trust signal near the button.
Google Analytics 4 reports it as the key event rate, based on events you mark as key events; Google Ads reports conversion rate for clicks on your ads.
How to improve it
- One page, one goal. Remove links and options that lead away from the action.
- Make the next step obvious, with a single clear button and the price, timing or outcome stated next to it.
- Cut friction. Fewer form fields, guest checkout, UPI or wallet payments, and a fast mobile load.
- Show proof where doubt arises: reviews, accreditation, real photos.
- Test one change at a time and let each test run to a meaningful sample.
Common mistakes
- Mixing traffic sources. A 6 percent rate from brand searches and 1 percent from cold social are not one number.
- Counting the wrong event, such as button clicks instead of completed submissions.
- Optimising for the rate and ignoring quality. More enquiries that never convert are not a win.
