llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at a site's root listing its most useful pages for AI tools. It is a community proposal; Google says Search does not need it.
A restaurant group with 6 outlets adds an llms.txt with 8 links: the menus, the booking page, the catering page and the outlet addresses, each with a one-line note. It takes under an hour. Google Search still ranks the same pages the same way, because it does not read the file.
llms.txt gets sold as a shortcut to AI visibility, so the honest version is worth knowing. The proposal at llmstxt.org suggests a plain Markdown file at /llms.txt with the site name, a short summary, and sections of links to the pages an AI tool should read first, so a model with limited context can find the good material without wading through navigation and scripts.
It is a proposal, not a standard. And Google's own guidance is direct: you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and its guide to generative AI search lists llms.txt among the myths. Staff have compared it to the old keywords meta tag. Other AI tools may or may not read it, and few have said they do.
BridgeE treats it as a small extra inside broader AI search optimisation: worth an hour, never the strategy.
