Why it matters
For many questions, the AI Overview now sits above the ten blue links. Searchers may read it and stop, or click one of the linked sources. Either way, being a source matters more than ever, and being absent costs visits you used to get.
Google states that pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode on the same basis as regular search: they must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. There is no separate application and no special markup that makes inclusion certain.
How they work
Google's AI features use a technique it calls query fan-out: the system splits a question into related sub-searches, gathers results for each and writes one answer with supporting links. AI Mode is the fuller, conversational version of the same idea.
What you can do
- Answer the question plainly in the first lines of a section, then add detail.
- Cover the sub-questions a buyer would ask next: cost, timing, comparison, risks.
- Keep the basics sound: crawlable pages, fast mobile load, accurate business details.
- Build trust signals described under E-E-A-T: who wrote it, how you know, reviews and references.
- Check Search Console. Clicks and impressions from AI features are counted in the Performance report under the Web search type.
Common mistakes
- Blocking Googlebot or using nosnippet on pages you want quoted.
- Chasing a trick. No schema type or file forces inclusion.
- Writing thin pages stuffed with keywords, which give the system nothing worth quoting.
- Ignoring other assistants. The broader work is generative engine optimisation.
