Worked example

Dental clinic

A dental clinic in Chennai sets its primary category to Dentist, adds its hours, 25 real photos and a link to book. Over three months its profile views and calls rise as patients nearby searching 'dentist near me' see a complete, active listing beside incomplete ones.

Why it matters

For anyone who serves customers in a place, the profile is often the first thing they see: the panel beside the results and the pin on the map. It carries your phone number, directions, hours and reviews, so many people call or visit without ever opening your website.

Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete, accurate profile helps with relevance; reviews and wider web presence feed prominence; distance you can't change, though your listed location can be wrong.

How to improve it

  • Choose the right primary category. It is among the strongest signals for what you appear for. Add secondary categories only where true.
  • Fill every field: hours (including holidays), services, products, attributes, a short description and booking link.
  • Add real photos of the premises, team and work, regularly.
  • Ask for reviews from happy customers and reply to all of them, including the poor ones, calmly.
  • Use posts and updates for offers and news.
  • Keep your name, address and phone identical across the web. See NAP consistency.

Common mistakes

  • Stuffing keywords into the business name. Use your real-world name; Google's guidelines penalise it and can suspend the listing.
  • Using a virtual office or a P.O. box as the address.
  • Buying or incentivising reviews, which breaks the policy.
  • Ignoring duplicate or old listings, which split reviews and confuse customers.
  • Setting it up once and leaving it. An unmanaged profile drifts out of date.

A strong profile is the main route into the local pack.
