Worked example

Physiotherapy clinic

A physiotherapy clinic is listed as 'Core Physio', 'Core Physiotherapy Clinic' and 'Core Physio Pvt Ltd' across 12 directories, with two different phone numbers. After it standardises all 12 to one name, one address format and one number, its listings stop contradicting each other.

Why it matters

When a search engine builds its picture of your business, it compares what many sources say. If your name, address and phone number agree, it can be confident that it has found one real business at one real place. If they don't, it has to guess, and customers may also reach a disconnected number or the wrong building.

Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence draws on information from across the web. NAP consistency is not a magic ranking lever, but it removes doubt, and doubt costs you visibility and calls.

How to audit it

  • Decide the master version. Write your exact name, address and phone as they appear on your Google Business Profile.
  • Search for yourself by name and by phone number and list every listing that appears: directories, maps, social profiles, chambers of commerce, review sites.
  • Fix the differences, including suite numbers, abbreviations such as Rd or Road, and old numbers.
  • Remove or merge duplicates. Claim the listing, then request a merge or removal.
  • Match your own website, its footer, contact page and schema markup.
  • Recheck every few months, and after any move or number change.

Common mistakes

  • Using a tracking phone number everywhere without keeping the main number listed too.
  • Changing your trading name without updating old listings.
  • Obsessing over trivial differences such as punctuation. Fix what is clearly different, not what is merely styled.
  • Paying for dozens of low-quality directories. A handful of accurate, relevant listings beats a long list.

Consistent details support your chances in the local pack.
