Query fan-out

Query fan-out is the technique AI search uses to break one question into several related sub-queries, run them at once and combine the results into a single answer.

Worked example

Hair clinic

Someone asks Google AI Mode: 'Is a hair transplant in Chennai worth it?'. The system may spin off searches for cost, recovery time, clinic reviews, risks and alternatives. A clinic with a strong page on only one of those five sub-questions can be cited for that part and no more.

Why it matters

One typed question is rarely one search any more. Google has said AI Mode and AI Overviews use query fan-out: they issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, then assemble the answer. The pages that get cited are therefore not always the ones that rank first for the original question. They are the ones that best answer a sub-question the system generated.

For a business owner, that changes the target. Ranking for the head term is no longer enough; you also want a clear, findable answer to each question that sits behind it.

How to use it

  • Map the sub-questions. Take your most valuable question and list what a careful buyer would also want to know: price range logic, timelines, risks, comparisons, who it suits, what to ask before booking.
  • Give each its own section or page, with a plain heading that matches the question and a direct answer underneath.
  • Link them together, so related answers reinforce each other and a reader can move between them. This is the idea behind topical authority.
  • Use consistent names for your services, places and products across pages.
  • Check what the AI tools search for. Some assistants show their sub-queries; use them to see which angles you are missing.

Common mistakes

  • One long page that answers everything shallowly. Passages are selected one at a time, so each needs to stand alone.
  • Writing only for the keyword and ignoring the follow-up questions.
  • Assuming fan-out is a ranking factor you can switch on. It describes how retrieval works, not a lever.

It sits alongside Google AI Overviews and the wider practice of answer engine optimisation.
