Topical authority

Topical authority is an SEO idea: a site covering one subject in depth, across linked pages, is more likely to be trusted and found for it. Google publishes no score.

Worked example

Dental clinic

A dental clinic has one page called dental implants. A rival has the same page plus 12 supporting pages: cost, recovery, bone grafts, suitability, aftercare, and one for each common worry. When a patient searches any of the 13 topics, the rival's pages answer more of what the patient asked next.

Why it matters

Topical authority is shorthand for being the obvious place to learn about one subject. It is an industry term, not a Google metric: nobody can look up their "authority score" in Search Console, and Google's documentation talks instead about helpful, reliable, people-first content and demonstrated experience. But the idea is sound. Search engines and AI answer engines break a question into sub-questions, and a site that already answers the sub-questions well has more to be cited for.

For a business owner this means depth beats breadth. Ten pages that settle one subject usually do more than fifty thin pages about everything you sell.

How to build it

  1. Pick the subject you want to be known for. One lane, tied to what you sell: implants for a clinic, school admissions for a school, bridal skincare for a D2C brand.
  2. Write one pillar page that covers the whole subject, then supporting pages for each real question buyers ask.
  3. Link them both ways. The pillar links down to each supporting page, and each supporting page links back up and across to its siblings, with descriptive anchors.
  4. Show who is speaking. Real authors, real experience, dates, sources. This is the E-E-A-T part and it matters as much as the volume.
  5. Keep it current. Review each page when facts change, and say so on the page.

A good test: take ten questions a customer asked on the phone this month. If your site answers eight of them, you are building authority. If it answers two, you are building a brochure.

Common mistakes

  • Writing for the label, not the reader. Publishing 40 near-identical pages to "cover keywords" is the pattern Google's spam policies target.
  • Spreading across ten subjects. Authority is built in one lane first.
  • Orphan articles. A page nobody links to, from anywhere on the site, does not belong to a cluster.
  • Treating it as a switch. It builds over months as pages get found, linked to and cited.

BridgeE builds clusters like this through SEO and content marketing, starting from the questions your buyers already ask.
