Worked example

Language school

A language school gets 2,000 visitors a month to its course pages, and 60 enquire. It creates a list of visitors who viewed a course page but did not enquire, and shows them a short ad about the free demo class for 14 days. Another 18 enquire from that list.

Why it matters

Most visitors leave without buying or enquiring, usually for ordinary reasons: they were comparing, got interrupted or wanted to think. Retargeting gives you a reasonable way to remind the people who already showed interest. Google calls it remarketing and builds lists from visitors, app users and uploaded customer lists. Meta does it with custom audiences built from the Pixel, the Conversions API, your customer list or engagement on its apps.

Because these people already know you, retargeting often looks cheap. That is also its trap: part of what it reports would have come back anyway.

How to set it up well

  1. Segment by intent. People who added to cart or viewed pricing deserve a different message than people who read one blog post.
  2. Exclude people who already converted, or move them to a different message such as a second purchase or a review.
  3. Set a window. 7 to 30 days suits most purchases; longer for admissions or property.
  4. Cap frequency so people are reminded, not chased.
  5. Give a reason to return: an answer, a demo, a clear next step, not the same banner repeated.
  6. Respect consent. Build lists only from visitors who agreed to ads cookies where the law requires it.

Common mistakes

  • Over-crediting it. Retargeted sales often follow a click from somewhere else. Compare against a holdout or against your new-customer count.
  • Starving the top of the funnel. Retargeting only recycles people other campaigns found.
  • Showing ads to buyers for weeks.
  • Tiny lists. Platforms need minimum list sizes before they will serve.

BridgeE plans retargeting alongside prospecting in Google Ads and Meta Ads, so one feeds the other.
